“When I showed my brother, who’s now a surgeon, a rough cut of the second episode of [Arrested Development] where George Michael burns down the banana stand, he said, ‘Oh, my god you burned down the Chipyard!’ I was very excited about that. It was a great expiation for both of us.”

- Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz • Discussing the birth of The Chipyard, the banana-stand-like business he founded with his older brother in the ’70s. Intended to teach a lesson about the challenges of starting a business, it unexpectedly became a hit after a L.A. Times reporter wrote a story about the teenage owners. Hurwitz describes the situation as extremely stressful and the business difficult to shake off. “It created so much discord in the family,” he told Los Angeles Magazine. ”There was a divorce scenario playing out; it was a loaded time.” (via shortformblog)

As I’ve said before, companies are all about people. Getting to know the Tumblr team has been really amazing. I’ve long held the view that in all things art and design, you can feel the spirit and demeanor of those who create them. That’s why it was no surprise to me that David Karp is one of the nicest, most empathetic people I’ve ever met. He’s also one of the most perceptive, capable entrepreneurs I’ve worked with. His respect for Tumblr’s community of creators is awesome, and I’m absolutely delighted to have him and his entire team join Yahoo!.
